Man Who Gunned Down Trooper Being Released From Prison

Ruzas, John

Albany, N.Y. - A convicted Cop Killer is being set free today.

John Ruzas was convicted of killing State Trooper Emerson Dillon in 1974.  He is scheduled to be released from prison today after the Troopers’ union failed to appeal a decision by a judge to release Ruzas. The State Troopers' Police Benevolent Association has been working to keep the nearly 75-year-old man behind bars.

Ruzas shot and killed Trooper Dillon after – unbeknownst him – he pulled over Ruzas for speeding after he and another man had robbed a jewelry store in DeWitt.

Ruzas was has 42-years on a possible life sentence.
