Syracuse, N.Y. - NY State Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood announced today the sentencing of David Smith, former President of SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Smith pleaded guilty in September to abusing his position as President of Upstate by using several methods to illegally increase his pay. He was sentenced to three years of probation, and he must pay back almost $250,000 in restitution, over the next 3 years along with $3,000 in fines.
AG Underwood said " We have zero tolerance for those who shamelessly abuse their positions and violate the public trust in order to line their own pockets. That’s exactly what David Smith did - and now he’s paying the price"
