Lawmakers Crafting Bill To Help Sex Abuse Survivors

Albany, N.Y. - State lawmakers say they're crafting a bill to help survivors of sexual abuse.

The legislation would create a private fund to help survivors take legal action against their alleged abusers. The Child Victim Foundation Fund would be run by the Department of Taxation and Finance, comptroller's office and Division of Criminal Justice Services. New Yorkers would be able to donate to the fund when they file their taxes. Anyone convicted of a sex crime against a child would also have to pay one-thousand dollars as part of a fine.

The Legislature is set to debate the proposal when it returns to Albany in January.
